Just adding another voice to the #DontRemoveYoutubeCCs campaign/trend/thing. There are people out there that take these small, lesser-known features for granted, and there should be greater awareness over this. (A thread...) https://twitter.com/ajplus/status/1303016391075864577
YouTube says "only a tiny percentage of videos have community CCs" so "it's not worth continuing with the tool". Yes, but that small % is at least something, and a lifeline for those with hearing difficulties. We should strive for better, not cut back. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-54074573
Don't forget captions isn't just about people with disabilities. CCs allow you to watch YouTube videos on mute, so you don't disturb others around you... or to translate content from another language. They're great and we should be encouraging use of closed captions!
I have long called for all government video communications to have closed captions support so that everyone can understand, engage and interpret the content with whatever disability, constraint or setting they may have.
Worth noting that @YouTube isn't bad at all. They have by far the best captioning tools of any major free video platform & the fact they have/had community CCs in the first place is/was excellent. @Twitter and @instagram don't support CCs at all...and they should!
I just hope @YouTube can mitgage their spam/abuse concerns, and continue to play a leading role in facilitating CCs on the web. Even if it's a small feature that not many people know about/use, it's so helpful to have and many people are thankful for it. #DontRemoveYoutubeCCs
