SUVs were the second largest cause of the global rise in carbon dioxide emissions over the past decade, eclipsing all shipping, aviation, heavy industry and even trucks: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/sep/01/suv-conquered-america-climate-change-emissions
So true. Seems pretty clear most people buying SUVs don't really need them.
We don't own a car, but the few times we did drive upstate, we took a Car2Go smart car (RIP!) and we zipped around just fine https://twitter.com/NatBullard/status/1291349000541609985?s=20

But America just doesn't buy small.
"As of the end of the 2019 model year, Smart cars are no longer sold in North America.. they have left the market due to low sales." https://www.cashcarsbuyer.com/smart-car-mpg/

People have been raising the alarm about SUVs for a while now. Here's our take from 2018: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/03/climate/suv-sales-global-climate.html
Related: Uber (like Lyft) pledges to go all-electric, a move climate experts say cd spark wider change in the auto industry. But neither company owns the cars that they’re pledging to electrify, and are counting on incentives to encourage drivers to switch https://www.wired.com/story/uber-pledges-electric-doesnt-own-cars/
And for folks who say crossover SUVs aren't as bad: They're actually harmful to overall emissions goals bc market research shows that many first-time buyers of crossovers had previously driven cleaner, smaller sedans. Yes! New parents in America seem to think SUVs are their only choice — are they having a baby elephant? https://twitter.com/sonsofx/status/1303723602861330433

That time we roadtripped upstate in a Car2Go! (To me even this car looks massive next to my husband. I have never understood the logic of hauling around thousands of pounds of steel as our *primary* mode of transportation)
Just started listening to @TheWarOnCars podcast during my midday walk with the dog and it’s great!
One thing tho. (And I’m catching up so I’m on an episode from 2018.) But there is so much disdain for the state of the NY subway... to the point there is aversion to more funding

Yes the subway needs to be fixed but you probably can’t do that without more money?
I grew up using the best public transportation systems in the world.. and honestly @MTA isn’t bad. I appreciate, for one, the 24-hour service (wow!)

And yes I’ve been stuck underground on a stalled train several times. But how is that worse than the traffic jams that drivers face every day?
I just worry all this talk abt how the subway is a disaster (it really isn’t) made people abandon it for Ubers, Lyfts and private cars

But now the NY subway *is* in crisis. I really worry about that
I’m not sure the findings of an *emissions* study would change done from Knoxville https://twitter.com/arthurfrdent/status/1303751704538619904
