1. #Belfast Thread.Took a dander from Millfield-Shankill-Woodvale-Crumlin today.Few photos of family connections,sites,buildings & murals coming up.First,St.StephenâsChurch of Ireland where 4 generations of my family married in 19th&early 20th century.Built 1869,adapted 1963.

2. #Belfast Wilson Street where the long gone Unionist Club used to be, & where my great grandfather Joseph Hall & his mates of Brown Square signed the Ulster Covenant.

3. #Belfast My family lived at 38 Brown Street. Houses in Brown Street & Boyd Street typical of the type of dwelling that used to be everywhere pre redevelopment. My Nana rented in Sackvile Street in 1930s. All gone now & modern development there called Sackville Court.

4. #Belfast Family rented in old Peters Hill & Gardiner Street in Brown Square area during late 19th & 20th century.

5. #Belfast 1st photo shows a newer block of flats in Brown Square.When being built,graffiti went up sayingâNo Yuppies here!â.There arenât any today.2nd photo of the infamous West Link that carved through & destroyed parts of lower Shankill.3rd,Victorian Diamond Jubillee Bar.

6. #Belfast lower Shankill these days is often associated with http://UDA.House shows UFF sign of Ulster Freedom Fighters, a notorious paramilitary http://group.New Shankill Medical Centre on site of long family home in Beresford Street.

7. #Belfast âConorâs Cornerâwhere Shankill meets Northumberland Street used to have a mural of âShankill Protestant Boysâ http://band.Now a celebration of the work of artist William Conor.

9. #Belfast Mid/Upper Shankill. The Hills always in view. A mural & a memorial to the Bayardo Bar bombing.
12. #Belfast Rex Bar, long associated with the UVF. Royal Bar. Mural of the Ulster Tower. West Kirk Presbyterian Church.

13. #Belfast Shankill Memorial Park and the âBar Berlinâ which has some interesting upper floors architectural detail, including a strange turret.

14. #Belfast Mural of popular working class Councillor Hugh Smyth.His quote is spot on. I helped to carry his coffin on a section of the Shankill at his funeral.

15. #Belfast Sugarfield Street. Another place my family rented in. Old houses long gone but the Nelson Memorial Church building still stands. Ironically the Reverend Isaac Nelson was a Nationalist MP.

16. #Belfast Opposite each other in Carnan Street, renamed âC-Coyâ Street is a UVF mural & Shankill Protestant Boys Flute Band.

17. #Belfast Shankill Road Library which has the Spanish Civil War Commemoration Plaque. The Shankill Rangers Supporters Club. The Spectrum Centre is an excellent community resource & meeting place.

18. #Belfast Red Hand Commando mural which includes their Irish language motto!
19. #Belfast Whiterock Flute Band mural. West Belfast Orange Hall. Northern Ireland Supporters Club. Northern Ireland Football legends mural.

20. #Belfast Shankill Grave yard. Very old site. Unusual statue of Queen Victoria from 1897 carved in Portland Stone.

21. #Belfast 1st Shankill Somme Association memorial garden. Personally, I donât think the WW2 gun fits in with the theme of remembering Battle of the Somme in WW1.

23. #Belfast St.Matthewâs Church of Ireland. The round tower gives it a very âIrishâ look, although it could also be Byzantine in design.

24. #Belfast Olive Street still contains old style housing stock. I have many happy childhood memories of Woodvale Park & the Bandstand. Woodvale Presbyterian Church looking moody.

25. #Belfast Woodvale road; site of my childhood doctors in this Victorian row. Just down the road from the scene of the famous photo; âCrouching Police Jeep, flying loyalistâ.

26. #Belfast Grandparents moved here to this Council house post war. 1950s photo of me in back garden!

27. #Belfast Grandparents always took me to sweet shop (now advice Centre) & Ardoyne shops ( now much changed) . Black mountain & Holy Cross Church part of the landscape.

28. Heading down the Crumlin Road. Edendale Linen Mill, now apartments. Statue of a âMillieâ on corner of Crumlin Road & Cambrai Street by Ross Wilson.
29. My Nana was a Millie at Ewartâs Mill (now being restored. Flats? )nearby when she was renting in Leopold street. All new houses now. Just at the bottom of the road was the Mill. Back breaking work & long hours. Photo of her with my Granda in 1920s.
30. #Belfast My Da was born in 144,,Disraeli Street in 1930 in a house similar to photos 3&4. Today the street is full of modern homes.

33. Final. #Belfast And thatâs your lot. My dander brought back lots of good memories of my Da who passed away in July, aged 90.
