Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize: I feel like most folks believe only a few hundred people have the power to nominate someone, and that is very much not the case. In reality, literally millions of people qualify as formal nominators. (thread)
The Nobel Foundation lays it out simply: if you belong to one of these groups, your nomination of someone is valid. https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/Nomination/Criteria-for-nominators
Do you see the two big ones here? Any member of a national assembly of a sovereign nation, and of course, the biggest one: any person who ranks as at least an associate professor in those fields. There are more than 150,000 associate professors (of all fields) in the U.S. alone.
Now, yes, some nominations are going to weigh a hell of a lot more than others. If Barack Obama submits a nomination, it'll more than likely carry magnitudes greater consideration than your first-year associate history professor at Ohio State.
But when you see that Donald Trump has been nominated by a Norwegian member of parliament, remember that there are 169 members of Stortinget (Norway's parliament), and the guy nominating him is a far-right member famous for his virulent Islamophobia. Norway also has assholes!
