As I was in the area doing some surveys, I popped onto Hankley Common to see the 'D-Day Atlantic Wall', a training site replicating an anti-tank wall and used to test explosives and breaching techniques.
It's phenomenal! There are two breaches in it (allegedly made by AVRE Onions) that show the internal reinforcement and strengthening.
It's surrounded by small scale obstacles and defences, with some traces of field fortifications as well.
It's alleged to have been built by Canadian troops, but I have some doubts. Googling it reveals that back in 2003 it when this plaque was installed, it was believed to have been Canadian. That now seems to have become a fact online. I suspect more research is needed...
In other news, I wore shorts for the archaeology surveys I was doing, and after an hour of roaming around the woods my legs are lacerated to bits.
