Some years back, nearly all political parties in 🇩🇪 thought 🇩🇪 could reasonably receive 200,000 refugees per year. For some, this was an upper limit; for others, a lower limit ... in any case, there was a broad consensus that this is a reasonable number to aim for.

In 2019, 🇩🇪 had 142 thousand first applications for asylum (2018: 162 thousand). Smaller EU member states (wrt population) France and Spain had nearly as many applications. 🇩🇪 has room for more refugees.

Relative to population, 🇩🇪 received fewer first asylum applications in 2019 than 9 EU member states. By contrast, Cyprus, Malta, and Greece had far more applications.

🇩🇪 should not wait for the perfect European solution to sharing responsibility for asylum seekers (spoiler alert: that may never come). For a start, 🇩🇪 should relocate vulnerable refugees from the Greek mainland:

The debate on EU asylum reform is now bogged down. The EU Commission's proposed #NewPact on Asylum & Migration may not make much difference. Progress will be made when individual member states lead the way by taking concrete steps forward and convince others to come along.
