Looking forward to the next #NutritionFutures20 plenary: "Does nutritional status regulate both sides of
the DNA damage-repair balance?" by Dr Ruan Elliott. Very much outside my area of expertise so no doubt lots of learning will occur!

DNA damage is caused by:
- reactive oxygen species
- ionizing and UV radiation
- xenobiotics
- spontaneous chemical decomposition
Defences:
- antioxidants (endogenous & exogenous)
- xenobiotic metabolism/detoxification

Dr Ruan Elliott - Metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes, & cardiovascular disease result in chronic inflammation & oxidative stress, which results in DNA damage. But DNA damage not only a result of these diseases but appears to affect their development #NutritionFutures20
Dr Elliott presenting "contentious sweeping statements"
- RCTs are not necessarily the best study design
- epidemiological studies, big data, or molecular/cellular research, if only used on their own, are not going to resolve the big questions in nutrition

Dr Ruan Elliott - there is a large variation in individual levels of baseline DNA repair activity, but we don't yet know what this means. #NutritionFutures20
