Sodexo - the company who @BirkbeckUoL outsource their events catering to - are threatening to make half the catering staff based at Birkbeck redundant.

We at SARN want to stress that this is a threat which should be deeply concerning to all Birkbeck students and staff who are interested in making the university a less racist and exploitative working and learning space for all.
One of the central reasons that outsourcing is so pernicious is that it allows the university to profit off the labour of precariously employed people of colour and migrant workers while maintaining plausible deniability.
Birkbeck prides itself on the diversity of its student community and yet staff who have worked to keep the university running for years now risk unemployment in the middle of a pandemic.
We cannot allow the university to divest responsibility in this matter. Sodexo is a company which exploits its workers and which, on a not unrelated note, directly profits off the prison industrial complex.
If Birkbeck wants to be seen as an institution which “support[s] and enable[s] diverse life choices” it must honour its pledge to bring all catering staff in house
