/5 This morning, devastating news of fires in the #Moria #refugee camp on #Lesbos reached the world. The fire destroyed large parts of the severely overcrowded camp. There are many urgent concerns right now, chief among them the safety & wellbeing of former camp residents.
/5 The fire comes as a blow to both refugees & locals. For years, camp residents have lived in extremely dire conditions, coupled with the added threat of #COVID19 in the overcrowded camp space, while locals had no insights into when the situation on the island would improve.
/5 The destruction of the camp infrastructure adds to the challenges of the already fragile and poorly functioning reception conditions on the 🇬🇷 islands and exposed the gaping shortcomings of the 🇪🇺 EU's asylum system writ large.
/5 Greek authorities now face the complex task of tracing and accommodating nearly 13,000 former camp residents, some of which had previously tested positive for #COVID19, while safeguarding the health of both camp inhabitants and locals alike.
/5 Next to the many operational conundrums (Where are camp residents now? And where will they sleep tonight?), this situation also raises bigger Qs about how the EU receives and quickly processes newly arrived asylum seekers as we await the EU's New Pact on Migration and Asylum.
