The camp system for refugees and asylum seekers is one of the least humane aspects of the way the world handles refugees. Moria Camp in Greece shows why: isolated on Lesbos Island, refugees faced a terrifying a COVID outbreak and then a fire: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/09/world/europe/fire-refugee-camp-lesbos-moria.html
Camps originated after WWII when, overwhelmed by the number of displaced people in Europe, Allied Forces just kept them in the camps to sort and figure out what to do. Those refugees faced the horrific choice of wearing former prison clothes or former Nazi uniforms.
Having spent the last few years interviewing refugees, my heart is in my throat hearing the earliest news reports out of Moria. After fleeing war and persecution, refugees were isolated in inhumane conditions. The fire was devastating. Before the fire, COVID was spreading.
I will never stop asking: what are refugees supposed to do? Where are they supposed to go? Where is it safe? Camps are horrific, war is horrific, dehumanizing policies are horrific. There is nothing but destruction and apathy and death on every side.
