It appears that many people's reactions to #Rhea or #Kangana are based on their political beliefs. That's understandable, but it's also dangerous. Individual rights are the cornerstone of liberty. ANY erosion should be resisted, no matter who does it (1/4)
The State (ANY State) and its many agencies will always be tempted to use coercive power against citizens. But its ability to do so is restrained in a free country by individual rights, which are backed by aggressive court action to defend those rights. (2/4)
Unfortunately - the rights of the citizen- freedom from easy arrest, freedom from demolition, freedom from frivolous cases, the concept of bail as a rule - have long been under threat. For years if not decades. The courts need to do more, but we are responsible too. (3/4)
We cheer on action against people we disagree with because that suits our political view. But then the other side fires back with its own action. The loser in the long run will be citizens, because they will slowly lose the individual rights that make us free. (4/4)
