THREAD:

Sorry @larisamlbrown this article:
"Royal Navy aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth could set out on its first mission with more American than British planes on board” is misleading

Although USMC jets will outnumber UK (10:5) for forthcoming GROUPEX this will not be case for 1st deployment in May 2021

@smrmoorhouse told us he expects 8 UK & 6 USMC jets for #CSG21 deployment. Not especially impressive but a decent 1st step & will increase in future.
USMC jets have been factored into planning for work up of QEC carriers at least as far back as 2014!

We should be grateful the USN is helping rebuild carrier aviation skills after a long gap. Access to the USMC specialist experience in operating F-35B is especially valuable.
An all-UK independent carrier air group would be ideal but UK and US foreign policy is usually closely aligned anyway.

There is trust, mutual respect & shared experience between the RN and USN that goes back decades.

Yes, in an ideal world we would be buying jets faster but purchasing a few each year is affordable within annual budget cycles.

Even if we had lots of jets, there are limits on how quickly we can generate pilots and support personnel
The real issue is the number, variant, and over how long a period, the UK will purchase more F-35s beyond the initial 48
