I wanted us to be wrong about Brexit. All the arguments, fights, predictions, statistics, data etc. Sadly, it’s now glaringly obvious that we were right. Our task now isn’t to ridicule those who voted for it, it’s to get them onside, against those who sold our nation the lies.
To survive, the Brexit snake oil salesmen need us to be at war with each other. They will do anything and everything to perpetuate the division in society that they created. We may have lost the battle, but if we want to win the war, we have to put our weapons down.
We can’t change the outcome of the 2016 referendum or 2019 election. Things we can change are hearts and minds of voters, and the 2024 general election. To do that, we need to be calm, be the voice of reason, and not give the Brexit liars the war they need.
It’s only natural that we should be angry - after all, the Brexit liars have wrecked our country, taken away our rights etc. - but every time we angrily rant, to please our bubble, the Brexit liars smile, because they thrive on our anger and the division it brings.
We cannot change the past, but we can change our future. We must continue to point out the failings of Brexit, but do it calmly. It’s going to be hard for voters to admit they have made mistakes. Our job now is to make that admission easier and change the future.
Ps. The inspiration for that thread was seeing tweets saying that Brexiters are idiots and deserve everything they get. How does that change anything for the better? It just makes us look callous. I guess it’s ironic that someone replied to my thread with this.
