Some electronics company has asked me to review a webcam.
They claim it has a resolution of 2560x1440 (2K).
The cynic in me thinks it is probably artificially upscaled in software.
What do you reckon the native resolution is?
It is here! And, you'll never guess what…

The resolution is HIGHER than advertised!
This is the max resolution the camera will send as a still image.
2592x1944
That's pretty impressive. The fine detail isn't amazing (zoom in) but it's a lot better than the 720p camera built into my laptop.
But, there are some oddities...
The 1080p and 720p shots are *not* downscaled!
I would have thought the camera would scale the 2592px down to 1920 or 1280 and then crop the image.
It does not.
Instead, it crops the 1920x1080 from the *centre* of the frame!
Here's the 720p image.
The angle isn't particularly wide. I'm not sure that matters for endless conference calls. Here's my built in laptop cam and the webcam for comparison.
They have about the same vertical angle, but the laptop is *much* wider.
Anyway, here's the link to the camera (I was sent it to review).

Going to do some video test later this week. It'll do 1080p at 30fps, but the larger resolutions are much slower.
It works fine with Linux, but I can't access the h264 streams.
Well, I've finished testing this 2K webcam. Rather impressed with the image quality.

So now it is… disassembly time!

The front is held on with a few dabs of glue. So a spludger takes if off easily.
Where the hell are the "stereo" microphones? The cover has grilles on the sides - I assumed they were to let in sound.
But there are no mics underneath them.
ZOOM! ENHANCE!
Here's a close up of the PCB.
DH-48-02 V2.0
No markings on a camera module.
I assume the mic is the bottom left component labelled 4R12 5WGD (or possibly 5WCD).
Hmmm. On closer inspection, it's 4R12 5W60. Can't find any info about that. Let's flip it over.
USB soldered in. Sometimes these have connectors.
Unpopulated space in the lower left.
Let's take a closer look at the brains
As reported under Linux, it's a Sonix.
SN9C5256AJG
Weirdly, I can't find a datasheet for it.
And this I think, is a Boyamicro BY25D80AS TIG 2022. http://www.boyamicro.com/English/Product/5962471156.html
