Tomori going on loan to Everton. It was strange to see him fall back to fourth choice after the start he had. Some terrific performances, most notably against Liverpool at home against Salah, having to defend that whole channel with Alonso starting that game I believe.
There were a handful of really alarming performances though. Bournemouth away sticks out, as bad as any of our CB’s played the whole of last season. He also got an injury leading up to the restart which meant he could never find momentum or games before the end of the season.
I love Tomori and I think there were times last season where he looked the most accomplished and natural defender from the four. He can match any player in the league for pace. He’s aggressive, exceptional 1v1 and defending big spaces. Despite his lack of height has a good spring
And wants to go and win the ball. Very comfortable on the ball, carrying it out and also passing bravely. His temperament sometimes went in some of those worrying performances though. He reminds me of Gallas in some ways.
Lampard’s spoken so positively about his attitude/work ethic so the theory there’s been an ‘incident’ we don’t know about doesn’t really hold up I don’t think, he clearly likes him. Sometimes dressing room dynamics play a big part. Rudiger is clearly a voice in the dressing room,
An experienced international and we know he can play to a higher level than he did last season. Zouma is experienced and his profile is necessary. Christensen is the one I would have liked to see moved on loan over Fik but again more experienced and loaning him out at this stage
Of his career probably sends out the wrong message in terms of his value if we decide to sell in the summer. Though I would say he’s lucky to be getting another season. In a Market outside of Covid times I think we might be trying to move him on this summer.
Fourth centre back is not a good place for Tomori to be at this stage of his career. He’s proved he’s a good premier league defender so going out to play games is of more importance to someone like Fik right now than it is to say, Zouma. So will he play?
As @grantdesmidt pointed out to me the other day. Mina and Keane will probably both miss the first 1/2 games of the season so he could be in from the start very early. Might Ancelotti go to a back 3? Fik perfect in the left or right of a back 3. I’d back him to play over those 3
All day though. And I think he will as well. Four centre backs are Expecting to start is not sustainable as we’ve seen here. I think the ideal squad build is 3 of top quality, one defender who can play as full back and CB of top quality and then a young player who can learn
As 4th choice. Terry, Alex, Carvalho and Ivanovic (RB/CB) is the ideal scenario I think. The fourth choice will only see significant game time if there’s an injury crisis.
