As part of our #5050in2020 initiative, this week we have published a report looking at the gender balance of contributors to @IAJournal_CH outputs from 2017 to 2019.

Read it here: https://doi.org/10.1093/ia/iiaa146

Here's what we found... (Thread 1/10)
#5050in2020 is about increasing submissions by women to the journal, contributing to the discussion on the discrimination and under-representation of women in International Relations and building the capacity of the editorial team. (2/10)
The gender report looks at the gender balance of contributors to all articles, book reviews, events and blogposts produced by @IAJournal_CH between 2017–2019. Here are the headline stats ⬇️ (3/10)
There is some variation, but overall 37% of @IAJournal_CH article authors between 2017 to 2019 identified as women. (4/10)
When filtered by topic, only three of our core article topics had more women contributors than men: Sub-Saharan Africa, Global health & development, and Energy & environment. (5/10)
Within the book reviews section there was less variation between the years, but the over-representation of men was quite a bit more pronounced. (6/10)
Every year we convene a number of events, including special issue launches, webinars and conference panels. Between 2017-2019 there was some variation in terms of the gender balance of panelists, but broadly the picture is more positive than for our other outputs. (7/10)
The @IAJournal_CH Blog is a space for our authors to publish shorter pieces relating their research to current events or political debates. Across the four core series there is some variation, but generally the picture is encouraging (8/10)
More than anything, the gender report demonstrates that #5050in2020 is a first step and that much more needs to be done by journals within the IR discipline. Help us do this by attending our 14 September consultation event: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAkdeqorjstG910yGNaXfPQHRDQDBLTRhtd (9/10)
We hope this report supports the wider conversation on diversity and inclusion in IR. Over the next couple of weeks our editorial team will be reflecting on the lessons learned from this exercise, and our next steps. Follow the report author @Leah_de_Haan for more insights! (END)
