okay so I haven't watched the mulan remake, but from what I've seen, they give mulan some kind of hidden ki superpower? which kind of feels like it subverts the entire core of the original, eg that Mulan didn't fit in because society was restrictive, not because she was Unique -R
Mulan isn't Not Like Other Girls, she's just brave and resourceful and a little bit klutzy at first and she hella doesn't fit into the narrow social acceptibility zone. But this illustrates a fault in the society, rather than making Mulan the exception that proves the rule. -R
I mean, are we back in the nineties or the fifties or something? When did we regress to the narrative rule that female characters only have worth if they possess a Latent Superiority To All Other Womankind? And why did my brain pick a really weird time to get mad about this?? -R
I dunno, what I personally found most surprising about the movie was the part where it cut to 20 uninterrupted minutes of Mulan and the Hong Kong Police brutalizing civilians.
