This is a student group chat that has reached the press. Most don’t. University environments are frankly unsafe for female students. Times article (£) Durham University freshers ‘aimed to have sex with poorest student’ 1/ https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/durham-university-freshers-aimed-to-have-sex-with-poorest-student-ggsch723j
These freshers are setting misogynist social norms before they even arrive on campus. Those norms directly support the actions of rapists who are sadly present in every university. Joined up sector wide action is necessary, this is endemic sex discrimination that ruins lives.
Since @UniversitiesUK #ChangingThe Culture report & Public Health England’s Commission of a successful and evidence-based programme to change attitudes, behaviours and social norms supportive of misogyny (yes it takes 8 hours) we have seen...
a relentless watering-down of prevention activities, rolling sexism & sexual violence into catch-all category of unacceptable behaviour - & lip service short online catch-all training for which there is no evidence of effectiveness.
Also “voluntary” extra curricular programmes always taken up in small numbers by those least likely to need them. It should not be on students with a conscience to call this misogyny out - but good for them. It is a duty to act to prevent rape and to promote equality.
