"Why is DUDUKE calling me by 5:31am now?"...I said as I picked

Duduke is a new mother that delivered few days ago...

Me: Duduke what is it?

She: Doc don't be angry that I'm disturbing but its the breast milk, it's not coming out well and mama wants me to take...

#OdogwuTales
Me: Take what...let it not be "Guiness Stout" or "Palm wine"?

She: It is ooo...she said it pumps breast milk

Me: Oshey pumper...Oya let's discuss "DO ALCOHOL INCREASE BREAST MILK PRODUCTION" and "IS TAKING ALCOHOL OK DURING BREASTFEEDING"

If you're ready... Let's Go!!!
Just Before That...How Does The Body Make Milk Available For The Baby?

- By sucking at the breast, the baby triggers tiny nerves in the nipple. These nerves cause hormones to be released.

- One of these hormones (PROLACTIN) acts on the milk-making tissues. The other hormone...
"OXYTOCIN" causes the breast to push out milk allowing the baby to enjoy.

• What Causes Delay In Milk Production After Delivery?
1. Premature delivery esp if the baby was separated from the mother after birth

2. Conditions like diabetes, thyroid disease, PCOS etc

3. Obesity
4. Had/have an infection or illness that included fever

5. Delivery via C/S

6. You didn't breastfeed in the first few hours after birth.

There is no cause for alarm, breast milk production is tied to baby demand. Keep stimulating, allow baby to suckle...IT WILL COME!
• Does GUINESS STOUT/ALCOHOL Help Pump Out Breast Milk?

- Drinking alcohol does not increase breast milk production rather it decreases it.

- Alcohol decreases the effect of the hormone OXYTOCIN that helps in milk production thereby reducing milk production!

DROP THAT BEER!
• Is Taking Alcohol OK During Breastfeeding?

- Not drinking alcohol at all remains is the SAFEST but moderate drinking of at most 1 bottle a day and waiting for atleast 2hours before breastfeeding has been known not to harm the baby.

- Not Drinking At All Is The BEST!
• Can Alcohol Be Found In Breast Milk After Drinking?

- Yes, it can and it's highest after 30-60mins after drinking and can last to 2-3hours before it disappears.

- Length of time increases with increase in the amount of alcohol taken, the bigger the bottles, the more time.
• What Effect Does Alcohol Have On A Breastfeeding Baby?

When taken in large quantity causes
- Drowsiness
- Short sleep
- Weakness
- Abnormal weight gain in the baby
- Decreased milk production in the mother.
• What To Do When There's A Delay In Milk Production After Delivery?

1. Stimulate the breast by massaging it using your hand to try and express milk or use pump.

2. Express milk frequently even if it comes out in small quantity by breastfeeding frequently every 2-3hrs.
3. Use a heating pad or take warm shower beforw breastfeeding.

4. Listen to relaxing music and look at the face of your baby...it will allow hormones to work well

5. Drink lots of water and get as much sleep as possible

6. DO NOT TAKE ALCOHOL!!! EVEN PALM WINE!!!
Not drinking alcohol remains the SAFEST during breastfeeding...
