Rey, Rey Kenobi, Rey Nobody, Rey Palpatine, Rey Skywalker. IT. STILL. DOESN'T. MATTER. The entire trilogy is about Rey choosing her identity for herself in spite of her past and the expectation placed upon her by others.
This all just boils down to how privy people are to certain creative decisions that go into the art we consume. It really depresses me how often viewers actively "pay attention to the man behind the curtain" instead of taking a film as it is.
I'm not saying we should avoid learning about what went into a film altogether, but that viewers should instead let the film speak for itself instead of allowing inside knowledge affect their understanding and appreciation for the film.
Of course, the exceptions here are making creative decisions that somehow harm anyone involved in the filmmaking process, as well as the facilitation of toxic individuals to continue working in the industry. Always be as aware as you can about these things when supporting a film.
My point is, no one imagines what might have been had George Lucas not decided to make Luke, Leia, and Vader related to one another. No one imagines how Lucas's original cut of REVENGE OF THE SITH might have played had he not revised the script and re-shot several scenes.
We don't care because we didn't know about these things as kids, nor did we care. We just had the movies, and they were great because we didn't know or care so much about what was being changed as each new film was being made.
I know all these new revelations about what happened behind the sequel trilogy are nearly unavoidable in this day and age, but if you can, try putting aside your grievances with JJ, Rian, Kathy, or whoever you're unreasonably mad at, and judge the films on their own terms.
I take solace in the fact that Rey's character is still being discussed as widely as it is. It's part of why I find her one of the most fascinating protagonists in any blockbuster, and arguably more compelling than Luke ever was in the original trilogy.
