Why weed should be legalized in India : A Thread
There was a nation wide ban in the USA in 60's on all sorts of drugs however in India it was a way of life hence it never reached a point wherein it shall be banned..in the 80s after the hippie culture came about in the states and growing addiction of marijuana...
India came under pressure and had to ban all the drugs which were previously legal because the states banned it too... basically succumbed under pressure. The then PM Rajiv Gandhi introduced an act called narcotic drugs and pyschotropic substances. (NDPS) act which states that..
Any person found to be consuming , procuring, selling marijuana would be liable to imprisonment or fine or both.
Now in western countries like Netherlands, many states in the USA etc cannabis has been legalized because people finally understand it's importance and it's medical..
Benefits that it has the cannabinoid which is an element of the cannabis plant is highly beneficial in treating diseases like HIV, cancer , arthritis , epilepsy helps in coping with depression and anxiety which is very common in our country nowadays..
There have been enough evidence to show that it not only helps in pain relief from these deadly diseases but also is far less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes there have been no cases of death by overdosing on marijuana anywhere in the world..
It has been used since ages there are legalized bhaang shops which sell bhaang under the control of the government if bhaang is legal why isn't marijuana? If we look at a bigger picture it will only help the economy of the country if we legalize it how?
1. Government can apply tax on marijuana and earn from it which will help in economy
2. Regulation of marijuana means it will be sold on the counter and not illegally by peddlers
3. in states like himachal and Andhra cannabis is grown naturally and is the only sources of income
For the local population which adds to jobs and revenue in the country if we do it legally, they have to sell it in cheap and in fear of getting caught by the police hence they do not get the justified price of the product
4. Reduction in crimes relating to trade will be reduced
No black market cultivation and distribution of marijuana
5. Generate employment
Legal outlook of marijuana in India
Acc to NDPS charas, that is, the separated resin, in whatever form, whether crude or purified, obtained from the cannabis plant.
ganja, that is, the flowering or fruiting tops of the cannabis plant (excluding the seeds and leaves when not accompanied by the tops), by whatever name they may be known or designated
And...
any mixture, with or without any neutral material, of any of the above forms of cannabis or any drink prepared therefrom;
— Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (India), Chapter I, Section 2.iii. NDPS banned the production and sale of cannabis resin and flowers.
Permitted the use of leaves and seeds.
Marijuana is included as a Class 1 drug. Schedule 1 (Class 1) drugs are illegal because they have high abuse potential, no medical use, and severe safety concerns; for example, narcotics such as Heroin, LSD, and cocaine. which is bizzare
Under section 20, In the case of cultivation, a fine of up to one lakh rupees and rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years might be levied.
For possession of small quantities (100 grams for charas and hashish, 1000 grams for ganja), a penalty of ten thousand rupees or a jail term
6 months to 1 year. If someone is caught with commercial quantities (1 kg for charas and hashish, 20 kgs of ganja), the court can serve a stern imprisonment for up to twenty years and pay a fine of two lakh rupees.
Can penalize a regular offender for a 30-year imprisonment term.
After looking at all the laws and the repercussions of utilising and procuring marijuana it is high time that we regulate the medical and recreational use of marijuana it clearly has more benefits than shortcomings and will only help in prospering the economy of the country.
Follow the https://www.glm.org/  and @Bohecoindia for more information I have not covered everything but most of the things that one must be aware about marijuana in India I'd close the thread by saying people are gonna consume it anyway even if it's illegal so we might as
Well regulate it in such a way that it not only helps the one who needs it medically but also recreationally.
