I’m not going to pretend this is a huge deal, but there is something very strange about the widespread media adoption of a term for a group of people, which the vast majority of that group either does not recognize or actively dislikes. Like, how does that conversation work?

“Hey, polls say almost nobody from Latin America ever actually uses this term. 75% have never even heard of it, and 90% the ones who’ve heard it don’t particularly like it. Shouldn’t we use a term accepted by the people it describes?”
“Look, screw them, I polled the three academics from my book club and the woke intern, and they all said Latinx is where it’s at. Put it in the style guide.”
