Everyone who talked shit about Rian “ruining” JJ’s “plans” needs to delete their accounts. Homeboy was winging it all the way to the finish line and it was O B V I O U S. https://twitter.com/pattinsondriver/status/1303543779811622912
Hell, I was told as much back in spring of 2017 by someone who was heavily involved in production of TFA.
“Who do you think Rey’s parents are?” He asked me.
“I’m not sure.” I responded.
“Neither do they.” He said.
I had figured as much but that still, uh, stuck with me.

“I think she should be nobody. She shouldn’t have famous parents.” He said a little later.
I concurred. It was the only way TFA’s themes around Rey made sense.
This person I spoke to was not involved in TLJ but Rian clearly agreed.

For clarity: he framed it as there being different camps with different opinions on it during TFA’s production. Nothing dramatic, it’s not like people were at each other’s throats. But there was no consensus and JJ hadn’t committed to anything by the time the film wrapped.
In fact, everything JJ said during TFA press made it sound like he was *leaning* toward “Rey Nobody” himself. This is not the talk of a man who has a secret Force parentage reveal up his sleeve. The Palpatine stuff in IX was a reaction to the fan reaction to VIII, nothing more.
One last thing for this thread, cause I wanna clarify:
Figuring out a trilogy as you go is not wrong. It’s necessary.
The trouble here is not that it wasn’t all planned out, it was the desperate scramble to save face and appease fans rather than stick to character and theme.

The recent PLANET OF THE APES trilogy is a tremendous example of an unplanned trilogy where each film builds off of the previous one’s ideas and motifs. None of it is reactive or apologetic. It’s not pandering. It’s character and theme from beginning to end. Real storytelling.
I repeat: If you know your characters and themes well and are willing to build on them you can figure out each film as you go. It's when you become unduly reactive to audience response and prioritize appeasement over story, that's where it falls apart. https://twitter.com/colliderfrosty/status/1303567300696485889?s=20
The considerable number of Reylo accounts that have started following me based on this thread have wildly misjudged my take on things so let's just rip this bandaid off now instead of wasting everyone's time... https://twitter.com/A_B_Allen/status/1303452480752308225?s=20
Guys, I'm perfectly fine with Reylos following me. But, in my experience, people don't really wanna follow someone who has a real issue with their #1 ship. Not always! I have mutuals who are into Reylo and we're cool.
So yeah. Figured being up front right now is best.
