it's fucking astounding they were able to find a route out of there. they must have been using decades old abandoned logging roads over some unbelievably rough territory. the one time a huge lifted truck would be useful and most of these folks are too poor to own one
if you've not spent time up there just uhhh picture the yukon territory i guess. absolutely wild, absolutely mountainous, absolutely deadly
even under normal conditions you can get lost half a mile from your camp up there and never be seen again. this must have been like driving out of hell
the fact that the forest service had to help them find a route. they must have sent a bushwhacking crew out ahead? i'd worry about running out of gas, how did they get a whole caravan out in civilian vehicle? brian's getting the atlas out to try and figure out how they did it
our friend was up by Shady Cove a few weeks ago, pretty nearby there, and he had to take the fucking mirrors off has truck to get around some corners. we are discussing roads with a sheer drop into a ravine or hundreds and hundreds of feet of scree slope
you know it's really disaster season in oregon when we all have to go consult The Map Corridor lol
anyway whoever piloted that convoy should be given every medal this country has to offer
this fire is, last time i checked, 0% contained. they are looking forward to the winds changing on thursday and then they can begin to fight it, all their resources have thus far been tied up in evacuations
i want an HBO show about the heroes at this rural fish & wildlife ranger district doing mapping and the USGS data people that built the programs or whatever that allowed this to happen. a bunch of nerds just saved the fuckin day in a big big way https://twitter.com/amyamccl/status/1303547723233157125
i'm a little sentimental about the firefighters. growing up here it's hard not to be, everybody has a cousin or a brother or an uncle up there sweating in a crummy sleeping under a turkey blanket. my uncle is retired now but he was head of incident response for the whole of WA
it's lovely to have trust in a public institution. firefighters WILL save your ass. you can run to the city and leave your house in their hands and know 100% for sure that if your house burns down, it COULD NOT have been saved. they'll die before they give up on you
