Getting around Guelph by bike or on foot is so excellent in long stretches: along the rivers to the west and to the northeast to Guelph Lake, but is plagued by awkward bottlenecks and gaping holes that mix vehicular traffic with active transportation.
By adding another (pedestrian and cyclist only) bridge over the Speed River, we begin to separate those modalities and keep both groups safer, preventing unnecessary accidents.
As bikes across the globe have sold clean out, more and more cyclists are crowding our already busy roads. More options for quiet streets and paths mean those cyclists stay safe, and driver's happily cruise along without the worry of hitting a vulnerable road user. Everyone wins!
This is what I hope to be the start of Guelph becoming a destination for cyclists. Our beautiful city is so close to being properly (and safely) connected to our best assets: the Lake, downtown's food and drink, and the @G2GRailTrail.
Bringing these assets together will take work, but will pay HUGE dividends later in tourism & fewer motor vehicle/cyclist or pedestrian accidents.
Thanks for voting for this to all counsellors, and incredible work by @cityofguelph staff!
