The last few years have been down. PSU offered I believe around 12+/- high school players in 2019/2020 combined. They lost all previous momentum with those classes, electing to go regional/national to find top players. They’re starting to regain that now with 2022. https://twitter.com/ralphdrussoap/status/1303457540278300673
Recapturing momentum in PA is very important. Franklin and his staff are well aware of this. They hoped that this push would have better results in 2021. For the record, they still sit in a great spot with David Jr. We’ll see what happens.
But 2022 is now the year to circle. They’ve already offered 13 players in 2022, nine of whom hold four-star ratings. Two of those players have already committed. Davis Jr. matters for 2021, with Enai White becoming the big fish for 2022. CB Keenan Nelson is also up there.
Losing Rucci sucks. No doubt. Franklin and staff know this. They’re mot happy, but let’s also remember that this class ranks 12th overall in average star rating. The class was always going to be small. 18 is the number and this dead period isn’t going anywhere.
My point with dead period is that “flip season” isn’t going to be what we thought it might, so I could see PSU adding a few of their top remaining guys and maybe just saving a scholly or two for 2022. Which brings me to my next point...
The majority of players that have committed are what I would consider safe commits. They have testing numbers. They have accurate reach, hand size, etc. PSU is passing on some top-ranked guys because there’s a major lack of info out there currently.
So, while other schools are taking guys that may be ranked high on Rivals, PSU is taking guys they have a solid database of information on. Every class will feature players that don’t pan out. Minimzing that can only be measured down the road, but they’re playing this smart.
