A few years ago I chaired a faculty search committee. It was really hard and I’m sure I made mistakes. But in the end it turned out great for our department with a fantastic new colleague. But something surprising about it still delights me: /1
Since it was an entry level position, I read about a hundred CVs and application packets for scholars in their just-getting-started to getting-established phases. And SO MANY of those folks have gone on to have amazing and impressive careers. /2
I follow a bunch of them here, and I notice when they publish or do something else smart, and it makes me happy. This is not my primary area of study, but I have followed it closely because I had that privileged glimpse into a whole generation of scholarly plans and goals. /3
So for those of you who may remember that, I see you and I’m proud of you.
