One thing I really don't get is all these so-called conservatives who claim they support the president despite his flaws because they like his policies. As someone who identified as a conservative for years, I see little to like about Trump.
His foreign policy is a complete disaster. In what sense is surrender to Putin and some Korean nut wearing pajamas conservative? Was knifing the Kurds in the back conservative? Is undermining NATO conservative? Is praising XJP for human rights abuses conservative?
Conservatives used to be for free trade, and on that front the TPP was the best thing the US had going for it. How are tariffs and tearing up free trade agreements conservative?
Conservatives were supposed to be for a balanced budget, but under Trump the deficit has gone through the roof and the national debt will surpass the GDP next year. How is that conservative?
Conservatives used to be against pay-to-play, but that was the essence of the GOP tax bill that Trump keeps boasting of, and he has turned the US government into a personal money machine. How conservative is that?
Conservatives were against executive orders and complained bitterly about them when Obama was president, but as Trump doesn't know how to get bills passed, all he does is issue executive orders. Is that conservative?
The conservative mantra for years was federalism--the idea that people in NYC, Portland, etc., could run things the way they saw fit without federal interference. Yet, with Trump federalism has been thrown out the window. Conservative?
Is being anti-science conservative? Using the DOJ as a personal lawyer conservative? Running the post office into the ground conservative?
So we are left with Trump's racism, which I abhor; his immigration policies, which I despise; his damned wall, which is a lie; his anti-abortion stance, which is strictly performative; and his nomination of judges, who are meant to be people who would give him a blank check.
I don't see a lot to like here. I just don't. In fact, overall, Biden is the more conservative candidate than Trump.
