Yo, ultra-progressives still shouting at me. If Trump wins this year, the right gets the Supreme Court. Affecting the rights of women, POC, LGBTQ, the poor, the sick, and the environment... for a generation.

You should not have to be “won over” to Biden to stop that happening.

Politics is not about creating a perfect world. That’s idealism, which is always ideologically inflected. Your dream is not everybody’s dream. The people who disagree with you are also real. Politics is about what can be achieved - and what needs to be protected - right now.

Any attempt to achieve wholesale societal change overnight requires totalitarianism. History suggests that whether that comes from either right or left, it’s dark. And fails. Nobody real, with a job or house or kids, wants a revolution. They just want things to be better.

The right sees “better” differently. On the left, even amongst the boring liberal center left, we mean “more equal”. We mean that nobody should suffer because of who they are - whether that’s a factor of race, gender, sexual orientation, health, geographic location, or age.

It’s never going to be a perfect world.
But there are times when you get to cast a life-changing, era-defining vote, in favor of that ideal. This is one of them. You shouldn’t have to be convinced or cajoled. If you care, this year there’s a binary choice.
