Here’s the thing about schools and Covid.
I want my kids back in school doing normal or even versions of normal things.
I get that things need to get back to normal &, as garbage as it is, bc there’s Covid in the city, there will be infections in the schools.

2/ As a parent here’s what gets me. One person with Covid unknowingly brings it into a class of 25. That is 25 kids & their family staying at home for 14 days.
14 sets of parents home, figuring out work & childcare.
You could repeat scenario 25x for the 25 kids in the class

3/ Obviously, we hope that 0 classes will be shut down. That would be amazing. But reality is is that if Covid is “in the community” the opportunity of infection is there
what happens when families have more than one kid in IRL school in classes of 25+ students? I’ve got 3 kids

3/ & two of them are interacting with a combined 60+ people in a day (one in high school). That’s a lot of exposure and a lot of opportunities for my family to have to take off and possibly isolate for 14 days.
4/ That’s 14 days remote working for myself and my spouse, 14 days doing online grocery shopping, 14 days of online learning and being out of the class for my kids. 14 days at home.

5/ Then there are the other people we may have interacted with. One of my kids does a program at the Stollery. What happens to them if one of us is exposed or has Covid? What happens to the program? People that need that program to live...they go home?
6/ I want my kids back at school where they learn, are social. They are better humans by being at school.
But the plan of 20-25 kids in a class with the

7/ Has me very uneasy for our fall and winter sessions. I’m worried we will have to take time off work. I’m worried we will impact other people in our community (including the Stollery program) & impact their health and livelihoods.
8/ I don’t see how we can’t reduce class sizes & minimize the risk for our health, but also our jobs.
I’m not a teacher, or an expert. But it’s unfathomable that non of the experts can’t come up w/ a scenario *b* where we are not putting us all in harms way.

9/ or at least minimizing the risks for kids, families and the people in their communities, by minimizing the number of people the kids come into contact with.
