I think trophies are overvalued in a strange sense in football, they're an outcome that very often depends on fine margins. Take Messi's international career. An oft repeated canard is that he's an international flop because he has no major trophies. But think about it deeply.
In the Copa America final of 2015, Messi was the only player to score his penalty but everyone else missed. This is just sheer bad luck. And the World Cup final, he had a chance that he really should've scored. I agree with this. But if Higuain scores then he has a World Cup.
Maradona played a pass to Burrachaga who scored in the 86 World Cup. But if he misses, Diego maybe doesn't win one. This is how slim the margins really are. And the UCL final of 2016, Cristiano scored his penalty but everyone else also scored. Trophies depend on so much.
Zidane won 1 UCL and 1 league in 6 seasons with one of the greatest Madrid teams of all time. He also lost a UCL final to Dortmund. Yet people know his ability transcended trophies in some intangible sense.
