Journalism thought for the day: There is so much I wish the public understood about reporters. Thread: 1. No, we are not trying to manipulate you or ruin your reputation. 2. The editors — not us — choose what stories run, how long they are and where they go in the paper. Not us.
3. We (most of us) really do care. 4. We (usually) don’t write the headline. Don’t blame us if it’s misleading or poorly written. 5. If you tell us something on record, it’s on record. If you tell us something off record, it’s off record.
6. Your intentionally cruel comments really can hurt our feelings and affect our mental health. Do you realize you’re being abusive? 7. Your sweet comments actually can make our day. 8. We’re not trying to be annoying. I’m just persistent.
9. We are some of the lowest paid and most hard working people you’ll ever meet. 10. Photojournalism means candids (besides portraits). Please don’t pose for me.
