Two very contrasting approaches in Ontario vs. BC - one limiting hours in bars/shutting down clubs and banquet halls. Ontario status quo with continuing society as is. On surface may seem like Ontario is lagging behind but there may be differences in what the drivers are 1/6
BC very transparent about public exposure events - @CDCofBC here is up to date - very clear that a number of public exposures secondary to bars and restaurants. http://www.vch.ca/covid-19/public-exposures 2/6
Ontario a bit more spotty - like Windsor for example has - but hard to find in Toronto. But going by media reports of exposures/need to test very little associated with bars. Last major one was the Brass Rail. 3/6
Why does it matter? Easy solution would be shut down bars and lounges in Ontario. Makes sense. However, if that isn't the place for transmission - and private gatherings are (which we're hearing about...) then what's going to happen? 4/6
People who would otherwise go to bars are now going to congregate indoors in MORE private gatherings. Although lots of people in the young demographic are really adhering to measures - there will be some that will party. Forcing out of bars and into residences = disaster 5/6
All to say we need the evidence and transparency to see where these events are occurring for our local spread, and to make evidence based measures to contain. If bars are not the major problem, and homes are - then closing bars may paradoxically make things worse. 6/6
