Been a tough week for the Bombers. Probably the toughest week they’ve had to endure in 2020. Lloyd called the club a “laughing stock”. Walla got abused from trolls over a missed handball. McKenna retired. Moz did his ACL. Lyon thought the halftime laugh was “not a good look”.
I just hope internally that the club is connected and on the same page. The external noise is one thing, but if it's having any impact and dividing administration/coaches/players/ then it will be arduous to improve onfield performance. I worry about that.
Thinking about this year, for me, Worsfold is untouchable. He took on a coaching role that meant dealing with players who had been through trauma.People generally avoid those kind of jobs because it’s hard work. He probably knew he wasn't going to win a flag. Full credit to him.
I think Worsfold's time at Essendon will best be remembered for stabilizing the club, improving the list (remember, there was a time that EFC players were questioning whether they’d come back to the club after the suspension year. Imagine that reality for a moment)➡️
the development of McGrath who is now an A-Grade talent, plus development of Langford, Parish and players like BZT, Ridley, Draper. And throughout his tenure he’s identified some of the club’s shortcomings, helped onboard a new system and put support systems in for Rutten.
And sure, there’s still gaps. The system-based road map that the Bombers are trying to nail down needs works. Still too many games where players go missing for periods of time. You can't have that. But there's also periods where it does work and the Bombers score quick.
Imo Bombers need to stay the course. Back the players. Back the Rutten-Caracella system. There's no other option. Because you can’t move forward by hitting the reset button every 2-4 years. Hardwick stayed the course with the Tigers. Hinkley with Port. They believed.
