In the City of London, Bank Junction has now been further transformed from a hostile traffic dominated place that deterred walking and cycling, to a junction where its a pleasure to pass through on foot or by bike.
This has been combined with work to provide space to for physical distancing throughout the City of London that means nobody need be stuck on a busy pavement or cycle in heavy traffic.
I also recently went to the Oval to look at measures that have been put in place there to stop traffic using a series of residential roads as rat-runs between main roads. The measures seem to be bedding in well.
You can see from this map how they have kept access to every street but also removed through traffic and let residents reclaim their streets from motor traffic that belongs on main roads.
What strikes me most often about Low Traffic Neighbourhoods is that these are the measures that actually change streets. We’ve tried speed humps, narrowing, greening alone – but removing traffic makes the crucial difference
