A brief history of #Halabja city

Halabja is an ancient city,according to some historical sources, the modern foundation of Halabja city today goes back to the early 18th century.
It was designated as a district by the Ottomans in 1889.
Almost exactly a century ago, the city of Halabja made local history by appointing a woman as its mayor. Adela Khanem was the first Kurdish woman to hold a post like this.
Adila Khanem was one of the famous leaders of Jaff tribe who ruled from (1909-1924) .
the British honored her with the title,’Khan Bahadur’, Princess of Brave.
She was also responsible for building a new prison,setting up a court of justice and building a new Bazaar.
-The majority of Halabja residents are Muslims.
Kakeis, an ancient Kurdish religious group, also live in the province.

-Sorani and Hawrami are the two Kurdish dialects spoken in the province.
It’s a place of many great Kurdish poets including,Ahmed Mukhtar Jaff, Abdullah Goran,Qani’,Nali,Tahir Beg Jaff,Mawlawi ,...ect.
-The Iraqi regime bombarded the city in 26th April 1974,resulting in 100 casualities,destruction of many houses and leaving some people homeless.
-On March 16th,1988,Iraqi planes dropped gas canisters and chemical weapons,at least 5000 innocent people died as an immediate result of chemical attack.
-In a special Kurdistan Region parliamentary session convened on February 5, 2015 in Halabja, the Kurdish parliament approved a bill to change Halabja to a province, the fourth in the Kurdistan Region,headed by the first Kurdish governor,Abdullah Nawrolly.
