We truly need a global solution to ensure equity of access to future #COVID19 vaccines. Some questions to @gavi @WHO @CEPIvaccines on the #COVAX Facility that we can't seem to get answered, however - THREAD https://twitter.com/gavi/status/1303407763893170177
1) With the last-minute introduction of a new option for "self-financing" countries (seemingly targeted to HICs) to join the #COVAX Facility, what does this mean in terms of equity of access if some countries can pick and choose the doses they access while others can't?
2) The "self-financing" countries can opt for enough doses to vaccinate 10-50% of their population, but "donor-dependent" countries (in the #COVAX AMC) are restricting for doses up to 20% of their population? How does this align with the @WHO Equitable Allocation Framework?
3) If @gavi doesn't raise enough $ to cover the needs of the 92 #COVAX AMC countries (<half of the $2bil seed funding has been secured), does that mean that "self-financed countries" could get access to COVAX Facility doses before the "donor-dependent" countries?
4) What is the breakdown of #COVAX Facility funds that go to the @CEPIvaccines-led 'at risk' manufacturing investment vs the @gavi-led volume based guarantees for companies?
5) Of @CEPIvaccines 9 funded vaccine candidates, how many, if any, are being manufactured 'at-risk' (with CEPI/COVAX Facility funds), with a commitment from companies of priority access for #COVAX - what are the amounts and the expected timelines?
