Really disappointed @TheLeagueSF did not endorse @SfYesonH
We *have* to save our small businesses and make it easier for them to start, and survive.
It's not just the jobs, which we'll desperately need, it's also the healthcare laid off workers will (and are) losing.
Proposition H is only for 3 years. If it's not working after that, BoS can change or eliminate it with a simple majority vote.
In the meantime it's insane that people starting a business are forced to pay rent for an average of 10 months before they can open their doors.
For decades small business has been viewed as the enemy. We've established a process where a single individual can tie a business up in the Planning Department for months.
This has persisted even though an estimated 98% of DR requests have not succeeded on the merits.
If that's what we want, fine. But I don't think that's what we want. I don't think most people even realize that's what we have.
In the 60s you could come here and experiment, try things. Now you can't even open an ice cream store without a six figure bank balance in reserve.
Maybe that was fine when we were surrounded by success. Maybe a culture of the one dissenter getting veto rights was acceptable when the City was blessed with wild success.
But things are different now. We can't take our businesses or jobs for granted anymore.
I came to this City with absolutely nothing. It took me over a decade to get a job that paid better than minimum wage. The fact that I'm a business owner was the result of a long string of miracles.
It shouldn't take miracles for someone to be able to start a business.
I think its outrageous the obstacles we put in the way of people who want to start a business. Proposition H makes it *just a tiny bit easier* for entrepreneurs. Do you think we could find it in our hearts to let people try stuff in this era of increasingly vacant storefronts?
Entrepreneurs are seen as wealthy techies because we've established a system that only wealthy techies can get through! That has to change. We need the jobs. We need the healthcare those jobs provide. We need the taxes those businesses pay. SFMTA literally runs off sales taxes!!
We are in a different era now. We don't have the same luxuries we had in the past. SF will be different. We need to let go of old mindsets, and focus on making the new normal better than the old normal. That isn't going to happen if we keep the same old policies.
