In the last 4 months, the NBA has made more than $1.3M on… digital collectibles? As crazy as it seems, there’s a good case to be made that it could be a cash cow for the @NBA for years to come.

👇 Thread time! 👇
1) NBA Top Shot ( @nba_topshot) is a blockchain-based, digital collectibles game created by NBA and CryptoKitties creator Dapper Labs. Users on the Top Shot platform can buy packs that contain “Moments” from a variety of different NBA players.
2) These Moments, like its shiny cardboard cousins, come in different rarities - the Metallic Gold LE (Limited Edition) Moments are limited to only 299 ever created for a single moment while the Holo MMXX Moments are even rarer at 50.
3) Here's an example of what a Moment looks like when you open it https://twitter.com/nba_topshot/status/1303419557529362433?s=20
4) Since launching the beta, 9 different Moments packs have sold out and 5 packs are still out there available for purchase. Drops for new packs happen but they don’t publicly share the schedule.
5) Here’s where things get interesting for the NBA - the NBA also owns the marketplace for these digital Moments where users can buy, sell, and trade their Moments to other users. For every Moment bought and sold on their market, the NBA and Dapper Labs makes a 5% service fee. 🤑
6) With over $5.4B worth of US sports cards being traded annually on eBay alone (source: http://collectable.com , 2018), it’s clear to see why the NBA would push this new-age collectible.
7) Let’s dive a bit deeper - here are the top 8 Moments being sold in the NBA Top Shots marketplace right now. Cosmic, Holo MMXX, and From The Top editions Moments are limited to 49, 50, and 59 respectively ie. there are only 50 @luka7doncic Holos of that particular Moment.
8) Because this is based on a public blockchain, we can also view every transaction on http://CryptoSlam.io ’s NBA Top Shots blockchain crawler. Here are the top 10 most expensive transactions that have happened so far. People are buyin' 👀
9) Here’s @KingJames’ Dunk Moment in Metallic Gold LE (299 edition size, 1st dunk Moment ever minted for Lebron) compared to a 2008-09 (non-rookie year) Lebron James’ Bowman Chrome X-Fractor (299 edition size)
10) Here’s Ja Morant’s Rookie Debut Moment (250 edition size) compared to a Ja Morant Red Prizm Rookie Card (299 edition size).
11) Obviously not 1-to-1 comparables but can give some insight into future Moments valuations. Could Moments be the card collectibles for the Gen Z/in-app purchase/Supreme dead stock generation? Possibly, only time will tell. Let me know what you think about @NBATopShots!
