I recently did a deep dive with one of the “healthiest” data analytics organizations I’ve seen in a while. A few observations:
1. This team was a perfect blend of strategic and tactical. (So many analytics teams are a full service organization in a constant stream of “requests” and always under water)
2. The team recognized the importance of taking incoming requests and had a good process around it. But they also were highly strategic and left plenty of time for their roadmap.
3. Their roadmap was deliberate, highly visible, and re-thought quarterly with key stakeholders. The goals aligned to various initiatives like organization enablement, query performance, data literacy.
4. The team had a regular cadence of planning and stand ups to ensure that the balance between fire drills and longer-term initiatives was being maintained.
(usually i've seen kanban work well but this team nailed true sprints)

5. executive management fully bought into their approach and they were able to “Serve the business” while also making significant progress on their “own” initiatives
