As discussions to #repealHB6 ramp up in the #Ohio House this week, now's a good time for a refresher on the "worst energy bill of the 21st century" and how it's harming Ohio's clean energy future, as told by @NRDC's @DanSawmiller - https://www.nrdc.org/experts/daniel-sawmiller/repeal-ohios-house-bill-6. Thread alert!

#HB6 became law through a process now alleged to be corrupted with bribery, backroom deals and $62 million in dark $$$ donations from the state's largest electric utility--FirstEnergy--to politicians. All of this shadiness led to the arrest of the House Speaker and his associates
But the impact of #HB6 goes beyond corruption. It bailed out 2 aging nuke plants + a pair of the oldest coal plants in the nation, one of them in Indiana. It eliminated successful #cleanenergy standards that had been saving consumers $$ on their energy bills and cutting pollution
Eliminating the #cleanenergy standards was on FirstEnergy's wish list for many years, only 2nd to its goal of bailing out the nuclear plants. Over 110,000 well-paying, local jobs in #energyefficiency and #renewableenergy that the standards had supported are now under threat
Clean energy is good for consumers, so nixing the #cleanenergy standards is harming Ohioans too. #HB6 traded the standards for the plant bailout, and it was a bad deal. Now, with #HB6 Ohio family's will pay MORE $$ each month and have fewer options to manage their energy bills
These impacts are only magnified in the time of COVID. The #cleanenergy industry has lost thousands of jobs during the pandemic - https://e2.org/reports/clean-jobs-covid-economic-crisis-july-2020/. Consumers are struggling to stay afloat, let alone foot the bill for a $1.5B corporate bailout - https://www.nrdc.org/experts/deron-lovaas/out-time-regulators-must-prevent-utility-shutoffs
#HB6 is making Ohio's air dirtier, even more egregious while we're in the midst of a public health crisis. And #HB6 is adding more pollution to fuel the climate emergency--a threat multiplier that is actively exacerbating existing public health, economic, and racial inequities.
The solution to these impacts is clear. As the Ohio legislature convenes this week, we know there is really no "debate" to be had-- #HB6 is bad policy, and it MUST be repealed in full. Ohioans deserve better than #HB6 #repealHB6 https://www.nrdc.org/experts/daniel-sawmiller/repeal-ohios-house-bill-6
