Each Churchill Squadron had two Churchill V armed with 95mm guns at Squadron HQ. On paper these were meant to lay smoke to support the advance, but were also armed with the beastly HECF round. /1

For various reasons we tend to overlook the Churchill V.

It rarely crops up in games and lacks the AVRE's undeniable yeet-factor.

The 95mm's stubby profile makes for a distinctive, if rather derpy look. /2
British infantry battalions were due to have an integral field gun for close support, but various problems with 95mm's trail saw this project never reach the field. Removing a small, if useful, card from an inf bn comd's hand.

Some experiments were conducted with Churchill Vs in Normandy, with small OPs set up and the guns used for indirect fire.

In this role, it proved undeniably effective and surprisingly versatile.

Similarly, employment against tanks was not to be sniffed at, given quite a few unlikely KOs recorded during the campaign in close range engagements.

The problem is employment of such tanks is broadly taken for granted and Sqn HQs activity was rather busy commanding the Sqn. /5
As a result, Churchill V's cemented itself in my heart as a rugged rather oddball variant whose rep is completely glossed over by games companies, copypasta generistory and a lack of tactical study.*

A good, solid tank.

*& incorrect claims HECF was never issued. /thread
Some reading this will smell whiffs of vagueries, hints and nods.

Yup.

The 95mm vs 75mm debate/exploration of symbiosis with 6 Pdr will be for another day, or perhaps... another medium entirely.

Expect something on Sturmpanzer (Sd. Kfz. 166) soon tho...
