DID YOU KNOW (I know my ecomm homies will appreciate this one)
Jiu-jitsu has a Funnel??
That's right, just like in commerce, Jiu-jitsu follows a pattern that we want to use to take our opponent from top of funnel, right into the conversion:
STRANGLE/BREAK

One of the biggest challenges for beginners is the question "WHAT DO I DO NEXT?"
In a sparring session, if you have zero experience, it's hard to tell what to do next.
Your mental library is essentially empty and you don't have many techniques to choose from.

This presents an enormous problem.
In order to understand what to do next, you need to understand what the point of Jiujitsu is in the first place.

The previous article established the point of Jiu-jitsu.
This is, first and foremost a self-defense. The rest is just a bonus
(Homage: Danaher).
So you understand: Don't get your ass kicked. Now what?
How do we not get our asses kicked and further, how do we kick ass?

The answer lies with what I coin, "the funnel".
See, everything follows a basic framework. No need to overthink anything...
Our goal is to move something from point A to point B.
How we get there is theoretically linear (though a little more complex in practice)

In Jiu-jitsu our Point A to point be is:
Move someone from a position of Most mobility/Power to least mobility and power so that we can
Isolate a limb and strangle/break.
If attacking...
In other words, if two people are on the feet, we are incredible mobile and powerful.

In other words, if two people are on the feet, we are incredible mobile and powerful.
In a world where two people are at their most mobile/powerful we do not want to match up if someone has more mobility/power than we do.
So, the first step is to remove mobility by getting them to the ground.
Once on the ground, we decrease mobility/power because science
So, the first step is to remove mobility by getting them to the ground.
Once on the ground, we decrease mobility/power because science
On the ground, we do not have the "degrees of freedom" to transfer energy from the feet to our fists.
Instead, we now have to transfer it from our hips (if sitting) or from our backs (if laying).
As we move closer to the ground, we become less mobile and less powerful

As we move closer to the ground, we become less mobile and less powerful
This is why people talk about why "strength doesn't matter in bjj"
Don't get me wrong, it does... but you see how we are no longer talking about conventional, straight line strength...
But this is a post for another day (subcribe here so you dont miss: http://jiujitology.substack.com )

So once you got someone on the ground, how what?
If on the ground, you still need to decrease mobility.
How?
The strongest part of our bodies are the legs.
Assuming the person you just took down knows BJJ, they will put their legs in front or around you.
If on the ground, you still need to decrease mobility.

Assuming the person you just took down knows BJJ, they will put their legs in front or around you.
Enter: THE GUARD POSITION
This position is what allows a person to use their legs in offensive AND defensive manners.
The next step in the funnel then is to get beyond the legs ("guard passing") in order to immobilize someone further.
Once you kill the hips, you kill the legs
This position is what allows a person to use their legs in offensive AND defensive manners.
The next step in the funnel then is to get beyond the legs ("guard passing") in order to immobilize someone further.
Once you kill the hips, you kill the legs
BUT WAIT! THAT'S NOT ALL
Killing the hips is not enough because a person is still STRONK
Bench Presses have people believing they will be able to push someone right off, and this can be correct if the person on top is not skilled enough.
Therefore, the next step is:
THE PIN

Therefore, the next step is:
THE PIN
See, it is simply not enough to kill the hips because people are still able to use their arms.
After the hips, you need to then move and pin the shoulders where upper body strength no longer matters. (Thread for another day)
Once pinned, we've now KILLED mobility and strength

Once pinned, we've now KILLED mobility and strength
So now what?
Now the fun part:
After the pin, the next step in the funnel is the sexy part that attracts most beginners:
THE SUBMISSION.
This is where we seek to isolate a limb and break it with a little bit of leverage.
Once you get the tap, match over.

BUT
What if I'm defending!?!?
SIMPLE!
Simple go the opposite direction in the funnel:
Consolidate Limb -> Create Mobility -> Create Space -> Establish Control -> (If defending)
Then go the other direction:
Establish Control ->Remove mobility -> Isolate Limb -> Submit

A Simple, step by step framework on where you should be moving NEXT depending on where you're at in the funnel
AND
Whether you are attacking or defending.
