1/6 After >1 year of long service leave I returned to prehospital & retrieval medicine last night for a
@SydneyHEMS night shift, and was sent on two fairly gnarly prehospital missions: one complex paediatric medical (helicopter) and one adult bariatric entrapped trauma (road)
2/6 I’m still reflecting on what it was that made me love being back so much - far more than I expected to - but there’s no doubt three major factors contributed to my exhilaration:
3/6 The first is the challenge and unpredictability of the prehospital and transport environment, and the stimulation of having to actively manage scene factors as part of the @zeropointsurvey
4/6 The second is the privilege of working in a culture that values and resources the pursuit of excellence, with open communication, flat hierarchies, and an insatiable appetite to learn from every case
5/6 The third is this: PARAMEDICS.
In my 12 years with the service I’ve seen the evolution of @NSWAmbulance paramedic practice and more than ever I consistently encounter dedicated professionals on scene who are a pleasure to work with and learn from, who are clinically excellent
6/6 It’s almost a tragedy that hospital doctors and nurses are not exposed to these women and men doing what they do, where they do it, day in and day out. The packaged patient we get with a short handover can never tell the full story of the wizardry that turned chaos into order
