Partly cuz a lot of parents need caring for! https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1302947264038678528
I talk about this a lot, but the assumption for these articles is always that self-sufficient parents are supporting their young adult kids and not that they need each other (much more common!) or that the kids are helping to support their parents.
The figure of the under-achieving white bourgeois basement manboy is not representative of any substantial population group.
S/o all the young adults taking care of younger siblings, taking care of parents, grandparents, stepping in to help pay the rent, go get groceries, cook, clean, dealing with government bureaucracy for family members, doing wfh IT support...
People are quietly out there sacrificing so much to take care of their loved ones because employers and the state just declared everyone on their own, and a lot of people aren't set up to make it day-to-day on their own.
