I don't know what "masculinity crisis" people are seeing out there, but I interact with hundreds of college students every day and I see young men who are into from hunting, art, and gaming who all passionately love Jesus and are training here to give their lives to Christ. (1/6)
I see young men who seek to honor and encourage their sisters in Christ, who are (literally) begging to be discipled by older men so they can be good husbands, fathers, neighbors, and ministers of the gospel. Of course they're immature at times and need to be humbled, but (2/6)
who didn't? In fact, who still doesn't? Of course there are some who are irresponsible or overrun with insecurity, but who hasn't been at times? Who isn't at times?

What if -- hear me out -- what if we stopped heaping shame on young men for not being "manly enough" and (3/6)
just taught young people how to follow Jesus with humility and desperation?

I had a 20yo in my office this week asking, "How do I pursue manhood in my dating relationship?"

I said, "Stop worrying about if you're 'man' enough and just be a Christian." That's hard enough. (4/6)
I agree that there are gender differences and indeed even some sort of order in the home and church, but the biblical model for "manhood" according to Eph 5, 1 Pet 3, et al. is rooted in Christ's willingness to sacrifice, not in sticking out his chest at the Romans. (5/6)
The "manhood" I was taught to chase was the Mark Driscoll punch-a-dude "manhood" that helped me justify my worst tendencies for domination and power. This is not the way, friends. I wrote about my experience and how it also made me a bad theologian. https://mereorthodoxy.com/loving-others-theologically/

Circling back to this, Rhyne’s excellent thread here is why I try to tread lightly in how I preach, teach, and counsel young men. I’m much more afraid of this scenario than I am a guy not building a deck with his bare hands. https://twitter.com/rhyneputman/status/1304580106556407810
