People keep asking me about Joe Budden - Charlamagne Tha God so here we go.

They having two separate conversations. @JoeBudden talking ownership. @cthagod talking about negotiation skills. But both are in more similar situations than they think.

Here's why.
This started last week. Budden aired out Spotify cause he wasn't fairly compensated for his podcast performance:

• #1 on Spotify in 2019
• exceeded expectations 900%
• helped grow Spotify's podcasting by 50%

But Budden never got that Gimlet, Ringer, Rogan level money
Charlamagne called him out.

Said that Joe knows his worth but can't negotiate it. He also said that Joe's one podcast can't compare to a pod network.

He also cited Joe's departure Complex in 2017 as proof of Joe's issues with media contracts.
Joe left nothing unsaid in response.

He said Charlamagne works for iHeartMedia and owns none of The Breakfast Club. Joe also called out Charlamange's cancelled show on MTV.

Both think the other is undervalued and not gettin fair share.
Here's the thing.

Charlamagne made iHeart more money than he made himself. But if he pushed ownership 100%, would we know who he is?

Budden made Spotify and Complex more money than he made himself, too. But would Joe have had a #1 podcast without name recognition from Def Jam?
Charlamange views his contracts like binding agreements. He down to partner, but needs to be clear upfront.

He has deals in place with iHeart, Loud Speakers Network, and now a first-look exclusive with Comedy Central.

But doesn't own much of what's made him rich.
Joe views contracts more like the NFL.

NFL players hold out if they exceeded expectations and want to re-negotiate. Doesn't matter when the contract was made.

That's how he viewed Complex-Everyday Struggle, and now how he views Spotify.
We're in an individual-empowerment era in all of entertainment.

Budden's next deal with a major outlet should def have an equity stake or revenue share that ties his comp to performance.

That should address some of his past disputes.
Charlamange always preaches about ownership.

He's now in position to practice what he preaches. He now has a huge following, and his Breakfast Club contract is almost up. I'm sure it's on his mind too.

They're both popular enough to get what they want, especially now.
