#meded rant ahead: when preceptors ask me what I'm interested in pursuing after graduation, I'm usually honest, regardless of the specialty I'm rotating through. 1/3
my answer of "psychiatry" is often met with a ton of awkwardness. I've gotten "why?"; "you're wasting your time/talent"; "guess none of this is relevant to you then." comments that vary around psychiatry not being "real medicine" 2/3
these comments 1) sting on a personal level and 2) ENTIRELY contribute to reinforcing stigma around mental health care. if we don't even respect our mental health colleagues in medicine, how can we genuinely encourage our patients to seek help when they need it? Ugh. 3/3
