#ThrowbackThursday to this magnificent sight! On a research voyage in 2018, #SciComm student Lana Young captured this amazing moment of baby midget #octopus (Octopus huttoni) hatching from an empty horse mussel shell aka #home
The horse mussel had been collected during a #fieldwork dive on the seafloor. It's likely that the temperature change from coming to the surface caused the octopus eggs to hatch - much to the crew's #surprise!
The crew were aboard the @otago RV Polaris II for 3 weeks to collect different benthic (seafloor) species from different locations from the Marlborough Sounds, part of our Ecosystem connectivity project.
The trip started in Dunedin and went up to the Marlborough Sounds. They were lucky enough to sea some amazing sunsets!
