Are luxury beliefs cheap signals? No. They're expensive. Takes years to cultivate an understanding of them and express them without error. I've spent 5 years with the luxury belief class and still make mistakes and social faux paus. Helps to be born into it, to be around it early

This is why Bourdieu, Fussell, and others have said the class you're born into is the one you're locked into. Can never be as fluent as someone born into it. This is what F. Scott Fitzgerald meant when he said "There are no second acts in American lives."

Goes the other way too. Suppose an affluent New England guy wants to blend into a poor rural community in the Midwest. He can look superficially similar. Wear their clothes. But even after years will not grasp the speech patterns, belief systems, mannerisms, of people born there
